Welcome to the first installment of “The Whispers,” what I hope will be a daily thought or meditation to help you know you’re not alone in this dark time. Each post will include a thought followed by a reflection. I know you probably have a lot to read, so this is meant to be but a whisper, a featherlight burden you can take or leave.
Holy ground is simply your welcome mat to whatever is beyond you.—RK
Perhaps because of the passage in Exodus where Moses approaches the burning bush, we tend to think of holy ground as hallowed ground. It’s sacred ground that we, being fallen humans, are defiling by treading upon it — thus the Lord’s admonition to Moses to remove his sandals.
But what if we defined it another way? What if holy ground were holy because we were standing on it? Holy because we were brave and willing enough to approach the Great Mystery and, rather than averting our eyes, ponder it?
When we allow ourselves the gift of uncertainty, when we understand that the opposite of doubt is not certainty but wholeness, then no wall or armed guards or concertina wire can keep us from crossing the border into the unknown lands of our greater selves. Beyond the border of our imaginations lies the larger promise our lives have held in escrow for us since before the dawn of time. Too often we berate ourselves and stand back from the gate, afraid to approach because we deem ourselves unworthy of being bigger than we are. But it’s exactly the opposite. When we dare to dream of whatever is beyond us, it is like asking God to dance. When we understand that it’s okay to feel uncertain, okay to feel afraid, and we jump out of bed anyway to face another day, it is then that we may find ourselves standing on holy ground. And holy ground is solid ground.
This will help me today and moving ahead.
I will attend a NOT ON OUR WATCH Rally at Plymouth Rock today. We'll all freeze to death, but it has to be done. Thank you!
