I’m still on hiatus, but since I’m leading a Mother’s Day worship service today, I thought I would share something I prepared for the occasion.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and mother figures out there. You are loved, always.

Prayer for the Mothering
Spirit of life, make me less than perfect.
Let me leave the cake in the oven too long,
a child’s question not fully answered,
the beds unmade embarrassingly far into the day.
Make me forgetful so what I do remember
becomes that much more meaningful.
Make me not much of a multitasker
so I may focus on the love before me,
one runny nose at a time.
Replace “detail-oriented”
with “Let’s see what happens,”
and “Finish your homework”
with “What do you love to learn?”
Make sure my days have 24 hours only
and not the 36 I require,
so I may stop to savor the graceful passing moment
a smile came my way
before hurtling on to the next sixty seconds.
In an imperfect world, our faults are many.
But imperfection simply means we belong.
In a world that needs mothers,
we all have a child who needs us,
even if that child is sometimes the child inside.
May I never forget, and always remember,
that the ones to love most
are those who need me the most.
May I remember, then, that I need them, too.
Because we all need mothering.
Even mothers need mothering.
Spirit of life, make me less than perfect,
so I may perfectly see that every day is a miracle.
