Dear readers: Desperate times call for disparate measures. And this measure is a bit of a twist. Now You See It, the celebrated (well, by my wife, over dinner) Substack newsletter, is now, with a wave of the wand-like pen, Magistry.
What is Magistry? Magic + ministry. Mere mortal musings + divine inspiration. A blend of magicianly observation and pastoral care. Our country’s on fire, and the best journalism, truth-telling, commentary and verbal satin pillows are now found on Substack as the knowledge-hungry abandon corporate media for can’t-be-bought voices speaking truth to power.
I want to be one of those voices. I have to do something, and given that there is excellent reportage and commentary elsewhere on this platform, and I don’t see any other magicians, I want to be that part of the resistance that calls us back to the magic of everyday life, that reminds us it’s all a mystery, and that if mystery means we have no idea how it’s done or what will happen, well, then, anything can happen, including good things. Mystery is not only our birthright but our friend.
I invite you to stay with me on this journey. As a minister, I pastor in real time to people struggling with a God who can allow Gaza and 2.0 to happen. As a magician, I know where to look to find secrets. I pledge to bring you a heady blend of magical thinking and ministerial soul-tending, essays and meditations you may find worthwhile, a mere five minutes a day that can help you navigate the other one thousand 60-second ticks.
Magistry is a made-up word (and the name of my nonprofit). Perfect for a time in which we need, in the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., to make up a new world out of the old one. So dust off your Nimbus 2000, hop on, and let’s go.
Thank you!
Nice!
